cracks in abandoned stretch of Route 61 in Centralia, PA, a ghost town which has had a coal fire burning beneath it for almost 50 years, and was part of the inspiration for the silent hill movie. more about Centralia here: [link]
The ground there was very hot to the touch, and there was smoke coming up from the crack, but unfortunately it didn't really show up in this shot.
HDR in photomatix, tweaked/framed/resized in photoshop.

Oh! I've heard so much about it. I've always wanted to see for myself. This is probably as close as I'll get. Thank you!

hehe, i love the signs that warn of serious injury or death in centralia.

There was a HOLE here, it's gone now.

Nice composition. Your shot almost makes the road look more upheaved than it is.

The graveyard there is bizarre. The keep burying people there, even though most everyone else has moved away.

there wasn't much left in terms of buildings or anything, however the fire is supposedly going to be burning for a long time to come. thanks :)

Yeah, it's difficult to capture smoke with digital.

I'm from Northeastern PA originally, and of course towns like Centralia would exist in my old state! Even though there's not much left of Centralia or it's neighbor, Byrnesville, I still want to go just for the creep factor. Of course, there's the 500+ miles of distance between myself and my home state...

I recently did some research into Centralia. (I have been obsessed with sulfuric-rich habitats lately, especially the Hydrothermal Vents at the bottom of the ocean.) According to the videos I have watched, the roads are very upheaved (although the photographer captured an excellent angle of the road.)

I'm from NE PA originally (and noticed that you're a PA resident on your page), and have just learned of Centralia and Byrnesville some months ago, even though I used to go to Knoebles when I was a kid (I know that's bad! I didn't venture out very much.) A good friend of mine from next door knows a couple of people in Ashland, and also explained that many of the residents are a little loopy from the fumes. From what I'm to understand, the fires threaten Ashland now.

They still bury people in the graveyards? That's pretty crazy! Well, there's still 7 people left in the town... Only in Pennsylvania!
